Overview
Project Oversight Teams (POTs) have been established to facilitate the successful planning and implementation of projects on Colorado’s Fourteeners, as well as to ensure their long-term stewardship. The overall goal is to have a diverse group of individuals and land managers work together to determine the best course of action to create sustainable routes and mitigate environmental damage. Most of the Fourteeners are grouped into eight different POTs based primarily on geographical proximity and agency management boundaries (see below for a breakdown of peaks by POT). Participants can get involved in any of the following POTs:
- Clear Creek Project Oversight Team
- Gunnison Project Oversight Team
- Leadville Project Oversight Team
- Salida Project Oversight Team
- San Juans Project Oversight Team
- Sangres Project Oversight Team
- South Park Project Oversight Team
- White River Project Oversight Team
POT Responsibilities
In joining a POT, each member commits to attending two major meetings per year (one prior to the summer field season and one after the season) and a minimum of one site visit per year. Some members will be more involved depending on interest and availability. Members are encouraged to consider this as a long-term commitment, as the process of planning and implementing projects takes place over a number of years. Although each POT will take on a different character based on the interests and skills of its members, the general responsibilities of the POT include:
- Development of project goals
- Discussion and approval of project timelines
- Discussion and approval of proposed trail/route corridors
- Discussion and approval of trail/route construction plans and restoration plans
- Site visits to peaks as needed (before, during and after project implementation)
- Monitoring of project implementation to ensure compatibility with goals and plans
- Long-term monitoring, evaluation and maintenance
- Community outreach
POT Roles
Each POT should be comprised of a diverse group of people, including:
- USFS Regional Peak Manager
- USFS Project Managers (as assigned)
- CFI Field Programs and Education Staff (as assigned)
- CFI Volunteer Representatives
- Specialists in Trail Design, Restoration and Other Areas
- Local Volunteer Group Representatives
- Other Interested Individuals and Groups
Within each POT, it is important that every participant find an interesting role. The following roles have been identified, but new roles can be created to meet specific needs:
- Project Oversight Team Leader – responsible for overall management of the POT, help to set up meetings and prepare agendas, run the meetings, follow-up on action items.
- Peak Leaders – responsible for a particular peak within the POT, report on progress at meetings, help to arrange and facilitate site visits, follow-up on action items.
- USFS Staff Roles (Peak Manager & Project Managers)
- CFI Field Programs and Education Staff
- CFI Volunteer Representatives – one or more volunteers serve as liaison between the POT and CFI committees.
- Community Outreach – one or more individuals are responsible for working with local communities and media sources to recruit volunteers, seek donations, promote projects, etc.
- Technical Assistance – members can assist with planning and design work in the field, related experience is helpful but not required.
- Adopt-a-Peak Groups – a group will be selected to take responsibility for the long-term maintenance and stewardship of a peak once the main project work is complete, a representative from the group is encouraged to participate in POT meetings.
