A Partnership for Preservation

The Colorado Rockies are part of the North American Cordillera which stretches 3,000 miles from Alaska through western Canada and the United States into northern Mexico. The centerpieces of this dramatic uplift are the 54 peaks over 14,000 feet, or “Fourteeners,” as they are affectionately referred to by climbers. Colorado’s Fourteeners are now visited by nearly 500,000 people each season. While some of the more remote peaks remain pristine, increased recreational use has seriously impacted many peaks and their alpine basins.

Formed in 1994, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative is a partnership among nonprofit organizations, concerned individuals, and public agencies to protect and preserve the natural integrity of Colorado’s Fourteeners and the quality of the recreational opportunities they provide. More…

Ski the 14ers Book Available Now!
Ski mountaineer Chris Davenport’s book detailing his recent successful ski descent of all 54 Fourteeners is now available! Ski the 14ers: A Visual Tribute to Colorado’s 14,000 Peaks from the Eyes of a Ski Mountaineer, from Capitol Peak Publishing, features over 400 color photos, a forward by legendary mountaineer Lou Dawson, and inspiring writing on Davenport’s Ski the 14ers project. The book is available now through Wolverine Publishing. A portion of proceeds from the sale of Ski the 14ers will go toward the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. CFI would like to extend a huge thanks to Chris for his support of our efforts to protect and preserve Colorado’s Fourteeners!
