You can make an important contribution to preserving the Fourteeners by joining a CFI volunteer program. Crews work out of backcountry and trailhead basecamps to build trails, reclaim erosion scars, and complete other important fieldwork. Volunteers have recently worked on Mount Massive, Mount Evans, Pyramid Peak, Wetterhorn Peak, Grays and Torreys Peaks, Quandary Peak, Tabeguache Mountain, and Sunlight-Eolus-Windom. Volunteer programs are typically 2 – 3 days in length. Some one-day projects and weeklong projects are also scheduled during the summer. CFI provides food, tools, training, and an educational program, but volunteers must bring their own camping equipment and work gloves. CFI crew leaders supervise all program activities.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older (unless accompanied by their legal guardian) and available to work for the complete length of the project. The work is very strenuous and volunteers should be in good physical condition. No prior trail construction or restoration experience is required, although it is recommended that volunteers have previous backcountry experience. Volunteer crews are usually limited to 10 people when working in Wilderness Areas. Outside Wilderness Areas, crew sizes may be larger. Volunteers apply in advance for each project.
CFI also has volunteer opportunities for
Peak Stewards,
Adopt-a-Peak groups,
Project Oversight Teams within the
Volunteer Leadership Program, or assisting with database management, obtaining donations for
volunteer projects, photo archiving, and more. To find out how you can help, please contact
